Why do Eastern Suburbs homes get possums in the roof?
The Eastern Suburbs have some of Sydney's oldest housing, packed tightly together, with big parks, coastal reserves and street trees between them. Old roofs have plenty of gaps, and possums use the canopy and rooflines to move between them.
The region was one of the earliest areas developed beyond the town centre), so many homes are Victorian and Federation terraces, semis and cottages with decades-old roofs. Waverley Council counts brushtail and ringtail possums as "a welcome addition to our urban ecology", and they live across the council areas of Woollahra, Waverley and Randwick.
The possum in your roof is most likely a common brushtail possum. The NSW Government notes that brush-tailed possums like to live in roof cavities. Ringtails usually sleep in a round nest (a drey) in a tree or hedge.
Why are terraces and semis harder to possum-proof?
Because the roof isn't only yours. In a row of terraces or a pair of semis, the roof space often runs across party walls, so a possum can get in two doors down and walk through to your ceiling.
On terraces and semis we check:
- the party wall line in the roof space, where gaps at the top of the wall let possums cross between homes
- the back skillion and lean-to roofs, which often have gaps where they meet the main wall
- chimneys and old vents that are no longer used
- box gutters between adjoining roofs
- trees and neighbouring roofs that give a way on
On detached homes and unit blocks in Vaucluse, Rose Bay, Randwick and Coogee, we look at ridge capping, eaves and rooftop vents, and at trees from the coastal reserves and larger gardens.
What we find on possum jobs
Almost every possum job we've done has been a roof entry, usually through the roof drainage. The possum climbs the downpipe and gets in where the gutter or box gutter meets the roof. On Eastern Suburbs terraces, the box gutters and the downpipes on rear skillion roofs are the usual way in. When the complaint is a smell, it's normally a possum that has died in the roof, and in a shared roof the smell can spread to the house next door. We find it, remove it, seal the entry and mesh the drains.
Is it legal to remove a possum from an Eastern Suburbs terrace?
Yes, by exclusion. NSW law says capturing or harming a possum is illegal unless an authorised officer or licensed person does it, and possums moved even to a local park have much lower survival.
