Possum Removal in the
Sutherland Shire
Something heavy crossing the ceiling at night? We locate the entry, let the possum leave, and close the roof off.
Our Sutherland Shire possum removal service covers homes from Cronulla, Caringbah and Miranda to Sutherland, Engadine, Menai, Oyster Bay, Como and Jannali. We don't trap or move possums. We fit a one-way exit so the possum stays in its territory, just not your roof, and we quote a fixed price first.
We don't trap possums
In NSW, capturing or harming a possum without a licence is illegal. We use one-way exits and roof proofing only, so nobody catches or handles the possum.
Individual NSW EPA Pest Management Licence

Why do Sutherland Shire homes get possums in the roof?
The Shire is ringed by national park, river and bay, and much of its housing backs onto bushland. Possums live right up against the suburbs, and when a tree hollow isn't available, a roof cavity is the next best shelter.
Sutherland Shire sits directly south of Botany Bay and the Georges River, and it contains the Royal National Park. Sutherland Shire Council describes the common brushtail possum as "highly adapted to urban environments", nesting in tree hollows "and, occasionally, the odd roof cavity". Council also notes that much of the possums' original habitat has been cleared for development, which is why they end up in houses.
Two species live here. Brushtails are about the size of a domestic cat, grey, with a pink nose and sharp climbing claws, and they're the ones that move into roofs. Ringtails are smaller, with a white-tipped tail, and sleep in a round nest called a drey. A drey in your hedge doesn't mean one is in your roof.
Where do possums get into Shire homes?
Usually from the bush side of the block. Backyards that run onto reserves, creeks and waterfront trees give possums a direct path onto gutters and roofs.
These are the places we check first in the Shire:
- Bushland-edge suburbs (Menai, Illawong, Bangor, Engadine, Heathcote, Bundeena): trees and fences at the back boundary lead straight onto the roof. We check the whole bush-facing side.
- Waterfront pockets (Oyster Bay, Como, Jannali, Yowie Bay, Gymea Bay): steep blocks and big trees overhanging the roofline.
- Established suburbs (Miranda, Caringbah, Gymea, Sutherland, Kirrawee): older tiled roofs with ridge gaps, lifted tiles and tired eaves.
- Cronulla and the peninsula: unit blocks and older homes near the coast. We look at rooftop vents, gaps above gutters and shared roof spaces.
What we find on possum jobs
On the possum jobs we've done, the possum was almost always in the roof and got in through the roof drainage. It climbs the downpipe and pushes through where the gutter meets the tiles. In the Shire, the bush-facing side of the house is where we look first, because gutters there fill with leaves and pull away. Some calls are about a smell, and we find a possum that has died in the roof. We remove it, block the entry and fit mesh over the roof drains.
What does Sutherland Shire Council say about removing possums?
Council's position is that possums are protected, harming them attracts significant penalties, and because they are territorial they must not be removed from your property. The official release limit for licensed handlers is 150 metres.
A one-way exit fits that: the possum stays in its territory, just not in your roof. More on the rules in our NSW possum law guide.

How much does possum removal cost in the Sutherland Shire?
Prices start from $280 for a single-storey home and $320 for a two-storey home. Shire roofs range from waterfront double-storeys to single-level bush blocks, so we quote on site. There's no inspection fee when you book the job, and the quote is what you pay.
In the Shire, the price mostly depends on:
- how much of the roof faces bushland or big trees
- single or double storey, and steep or waterfront blocks
- tile or metal roof, and the number of gaps
- repairs needed first, such as cracked tiles or rotten fascia
