Why do Western Sydney homes get possums in the roof?

Western Sydney has big suburban blocks, creek corridors, parklands and plenty of backyard fruit trees. Possums live along the creeks and parks, feed in the gardens, and move into roofs when there's no tree hollow nearby.

The City of Fairfield alone covers 102 square kilometres of Sydney's west. Across the region, NSW Government guidance applies the same way as anywhere else: brush-tailed possums like to live in roof cavities, and removing a possum alone doesn't fix the problem, because another moves into the empty space.

Most possums we find in Western Sydney roofs are common brushtail possums. Ringtails usually sleep in a round nest (a drey) in a tree or thick shrub.

Where do possums get into Western Sydney homes?

Mostly through older roofs and from the backyard. Fruit trees, sheds, pergolas and granny flats give a possum an easy climb onto the main roof.

These are the places we check first:

  • Brick-and-tile homes from the 1960s to 1980s (Fairfield, Smithfield, Guildford, Seven Hills, Blacktown): ridge gaps, lifted tiles and gaps in the eaves.
  • Backyard fruit trees: figs, mulberries, citrus, loquats and grapevines bring possums in every night. Branches over the roof are the usual entry route.
  • Extensions and granny flats: gaps where a newer roof joins the old one.
  • Creek-side streets (along Prospect Creek and the parklands): trees and fences lead straight from the reserve to the roof.

What we find on possum jobs

On the possum jobs we've done, the possum is almost always living in the roof, and the way in is usually the roof drainage. It climbs the downpipe, often from a fruit tree or pergola next to it, and gets in where the gutter meets the tiles. That's the pattern on a lot of 1960s–1980s brick-and-tile homes in Fairfield and around Blacktown. When people call about a smell, it's usually a possum that has died in the roof. We remove it, block the entry and put mesh over the roof drains.

Is it legal to trap or poison a possum in Western Sydney?

No. Possums are protected in NSW, and capturing or harming one is illegal unless a licensed person does it. That rules out rat bait, traps, and dropping one off in the parklands.

The legal way is exclusion: a one-way exit, then sealing. Our guide to NSW possum law covers the detail.

How do we get a possum out of a Western Sydney roof?

In Western Sydney, the backyard matters as much as the roof. Fruit trees, pergolas and granny flats are often the possum's way up.

  1. House and yard inspection

Roof void, gutters, downpipes, extensions and granny flats, plus fruit trees and pergolas near the roof.

  2. Fixed quote

An itemised price, agreed before work starts.

  3. One-way exit

Smaller gaps are sealed and the exit goes on the main entry.

  4. Seal and mesh

When the roof is quiet, the exit comes off, the entry is sealed and the roof drains are meshed. Photos included.

  5. One-way possum exclusion door installed on a tiled roof gap

How much does possum removal cost in Western Sydney?

Prices start from $280 for a single-storey home and $320 for a two-storey home. Larger roofs, extensions and granny flats add to the job, so we quote after the inspection. The quote is fixed and there's no inspection fee when you book the job.

Here, the price mostly depends on:

  • the size of the roof, and extensions or granny flats that also need proofing
  • tile or metal roof, and the number of gaps
  • how many branches and structures lead onto the roof
  • repairs needed first, such as cracked tiles or rotten eaves
Sealed roofline with possum proofing fitted along the tiles

Why choose Super Pest Controler?

Possum removal in Western Sydney: FAQs

Will Fairfield or Blacktown Council remove a possum?

No. Fairfield and Blacktown councils don't take possums out of private roofs. NSW rules require a landholder's licence or a licensed operator for any removal that involves catching the possum. For injured wildlife, call WIRES on 1300 094 737.

Can I use rat bait or a trap on a possum?

No. Harming or capturing a possum without a licence is illegal in NSW, and a poisoned possum often dies inside the roof, which leaves you with a smell and a bigger job. If that's already happened, our dead animal removal service can find it.

How do I get rid of possums permanently?

Seal every entry, mesh the gutters and downpipes, trim branches off the roof, and pick up fallen fruit so the possum has less reason to stay.

What's that bad smell coming from my ceiling?

Usually a possum that has died in the roof, and sometimes one that ate bait meant for rats. We remove it, seal the entry and mesh the drains. See dead animal removal.

Is it a possum or a rat in my ceiling?

Possums thump around dusk and dawn; rats scratch lightly all night. If it's rats, see rodent control.
