Parramatta and Ryde

Thumping in the roof after dark? We find the entry, let the possum go, and make sure it can't return.

Our possum removal service covers Parramatta, North Parramatta, Westmead, Rydalmere, Ermington, Dundas and Carlingford, plus the Ryde side: Ryde, West Ryde, Eastwood, Denistone, Putney, Gladesville and Hunters Hill. Why do Parramatta and Ryde homes get possums in the roof?

The Parramatta River and its creeks run through both areas, with bushland reserves and big old trees along them. Possums live along these green corridors and move into roofs when they can't find a tree hollow.

City of Parramatta's own bushland fauna surveys found over 130 native species, including 12 threatened with extinction, in the council's bushland. Council also notes that possums enjoy fruit-bearing plants and asks residents not to feed them, because feeding keeps them coming back to the same yard.

The possum in your roof is most likely a common brushtail possum. The NSW Government notes that brush-tailed possums like to live in roof cavities. Ringtails usually sleep in a round nest (a drey) in a tree or shrub.

Where do possums get into homes around Parramatta and Ryde?

Through gaps in older roofs, and from trees along the river and creek reserves. The housing is a mix of older brick homes, Federation cottages, newer townhouses and apartment blocks, and each has its own weak spots.

These are the places we check first:

  • Older houses (North Parramatta, Harris Park, Ermington, West Ryde, Eastwood): tiled roofs with ridge gaps, lifted tiles and gaps in the eaves.
  • Riverside and creek-side streets (Rydalmere, Ermington, Putney, Gladesville, Hunters Hill): big trees overhang the roofline, and reserves run behind the houses.
  • Townhouses and unit blocks (Parramatta, Westmead, Ryde): shared roof spaces, rooftop vents and gaps above gutters. We work with strata on these.
  • Fruit trees in the yard: mulberries, citrus and figs draw possums in at night. We'll tell you if a tree is the reason they keep coming back.

What we find on possum jobs

Across our possum jobs, the possum is nearly always in the roof, and it usually gets in through the roof drainage: up the downpipe and through the gap at the gutter. Around Parramatta and Ryde, that's typically older brick-and-tile homes, and townhouse roofs where box gutters meet walls. A fruit tree next to the gutter makes it easy. When the call is about a smell, we usually find a possum that died in the roof. We remove it, seal the entry and mesh the roof drains.

Can you legally remove a possum in Parramatta or Ryde?

Only by exclusion, unless you hold a licence. In NSW, capturing or harming a possum is illegal without one, and dumping a possum at Lake Parramatta or a riverside park greatly reduces its survival.

A one-way exit is legal and humane. For the full picture, read possum removal laws in NSW.

How do we get a possum out of a Parramatta or Ryde roof?

We work out every way the possum gets in, put a one-way exit on the busiest entry, and close off the others the same day. After dark the possum walks out to feed, finds it can't get back in, and moves to a tree nearby instead.

  1. Look at the whole roof

Inside the void and outside, from ridge and tiles to eaves, box gutters and vents. We also look at the trees on the river or creek side of the block, and we check it isn't rats.

  2. Price it once

You get one itemised quote for the exit, the sealing and any small repairs. We'll come back with a fixed price, not a guess.

  3. Exit on, gaps closed

The minor gaps are sealed on the first visit and the exit goes on the main entry.

  4. Return and seal

Once the roof has been quiet, we take the exit off and seal that last hole for good. You get before and after photos of each entry.

  5. One-way possum exclusion door installed on a tiled roof gap

Renting, or managing a property in Parramatta or Ryde?

Tell us who needs the paperwork. A lot of homes around Parramatta, Westmead and Ryde are rentals, townhouses or strata units, so the person who hears the possum is often not the person who approves the work.

We can quote directly to the landlord, agent or strata manager, arrange access with the tenant, and send the report with photos of every sealed entry to whoever pays. In a shared roof, we point out which gaps belong to which unit, so the owners' corporation can see where the possum was getting in.

How much does possum removal cost in Parramatta and Ryde?

Prices start from $280 for a single-storey home and $320 for a two-storey home. Houses, townhouses and strata roofs all price differently around Parramatta and Ryde, so we quote after the inspection. The quote is fixed and there's no inspection fee when you book the job.

Here, the price mostly depends on:

  • house, townhouse or unit block (shared roofs need strata access)
  • single or double storey, and roof pitch
  • tile or metal roof, and the number of gaps
  • repairs needed first, such as cracked tiles or rotten eaves
Sealed roofline with possum proofing fitted along the tiles

Possum removal in Parramatta and Ryde: FAQs

Will City of Parramatta or Ryde Council remove a possum?

No. It's up to the property owner. NSW lets you either apply for a landholder's licence or use a licensed operator, or exclude the possum without handling it, which is what we do. WIRES (1300 094 737) handles sick or injured wildlife.

Should I stop feeding the possum?

Yes. City of Parramatta asks residents not to feed possums, and food left out gives a possum a reason to stay close to your roof.

How do I get rid of possums permanently?

Seal every entry once the possum is out, mesh the gutters and downpipes, and don't leave fruit or food out. City of Parramatta asks residents not to feed possums for the same reason.

What's that bad smell coming from my ceiling?

Typically a possum that has died in the roof. We remove it, seal the entry and mesh the drains. See dead animal removal.

Is it a possum or a rat in my ceiling?

Possums thump; rats scratch lightly and often. Riverside homes can get both. If it's rats, see rodent control.
